4.1 Endoscope Structure & Function

There are many different models of flexible endoscopes available in Australia. Each endoscope has an instruction book supplied by the manufacturer.

It is essential that every person responsible for flexible endoscope decontamination reads these instruction books and becomes familiar with the particular characteristics of each model of flexible endoscope they are required to clean.

Never reprocess an instrument for which the manufacturer's instructions have not been sighted.

Contact details for manufacturers are available on the GENCA website.

Although there are differences between manufacturers, and even between different instruments from the same manufacturer, they all have some elements in common.

OBJECTIVES

After completion of this module you will be able to:

  • Describe the function of the internal components of a flexible endoscope
  • Describe the function of the external components of a flexible endoscope
