Radiation Oncology
Overview
Provision of a comprehensive service in cancer management utilising radiotherapy. An integrated multi-disciplinary approach is practised wherever appropriate and feasible. Services include:
(i) Consultation services to :

The Townsville Hospital – 6 specialist outpatient clinics per week in Radiation Oncology, a range of multi-disciplinary group meeetings;

Cairns Base Hospital – 2 outpatient clinics per fortnight

Mackay Base Hospital – 6 outpatient clinics per fortnight.
(ii) A full service in external beam radiotherapy including two state of the art dual modality high energy linear accelerators with MLC and EPI and 3D Conformal Planning with dedicated 20 slice CT scanner.. Two clinicsare available with a third planned. Superficial x-ray therapy.
(iii) Brachytherapy:

Remote automated after loading system for intra-cavitary and interstitial work (Micro-Selectron) mainly for gynaecological cancer but also breast cancer and sarcomas.

Unsealed radioactive sources for oral /IV administration e.g. Strontium 89, P32. Facilities include a standard simulator, dedicated CT scanner for radiotherapy planning, XIO and Focal sim networked 3D planning.

Routine appointments by medical referral in writing. Patients are seen within one week of referral unless otherwise requested by the referring doctor.
