The Return to Clinical Practice Framework has been introduced by the Allied Health Workforce Advice and Coordination Unit to assist health service districts to support allied health professionals who wish to return to practice after a period of absence. This framework can also be applied to allied health professionals who wish to change their area of clinical practice.
The Return to Clinical Practice Framework has been introduced for two reasons. Firstly, the framework will ensure that re-entrants practise safely and competently during their return to clinical practice in accordance with the Allied Health Clinical Governance Framework. Secondly, the increase in the potential number of allied health professionals may help to address the predicted shortfalls in the Australian healthcare workforce.
Existing systems and projects within Queensland Health which are related to and are potential enablers of this framework are: the Ministerial Taskforce on Clinical Education and Training (March 2007); the allied health clinical education resources which were afforded by the Health Practitioners Agreement (No.1) 2007 and the Allied Health Professional Support and Development Framework. It is anticipated that support of allied health re-entrants and the Return to Clinical Practice Framework will be a core business activity for allied health professionals within Queensland Health.
These guidelines have been written for allied health professionals who wish to participate in a re-entry process. Advice is also provided for existing Queensland Health allied health staff, who may become involved in the supervision and/or support of re-entrants.
The guidelines form part of the Allied Health Return to Clinical Practice - Re-Entry Information Kit which includes the following resources:
