Australian South Sea Islanders
Acknowledging differences
As a health staff member your beliefs are probably influenced by the Western medical tradition. Here are some tips to help you connect with clients of different cultures.
- Recognise your beliefs as 'beliefs'. Not everyone will share your beliefs. Your beliefs are not automatically right.
- It's not enough to just provide a treatment or explain your perception of the illness – you must discover your client's perception of the illness.
- You should do what you can to reduce the differences in perceptions between you and your client.
- If the client does not agree with, or understand, your perceptions of health or your treatment, noncompliance is likely to result.
- Be open to the fact that Australian South Sea Islander beliefs and traditions may have something to offer your traditions.
By listening to your client you can begin to build a relationship based on trust and respect.
