An Introduction

Welcome to Queensland Health's Australian South Sea Islanders online training for all health staff members. This training will help you provide the most appropriate health care to Australian South Sea Islanders.

The Queensland Health website training builds upon the Australian South Sea Islander community whole-of-government online information workshop under Multicultural Affairs Queensland on the Department of Premier and Cabinet website. You are encouraged to visit this website first before undertaking any of the training provided on this website. Knowledge of this unique history is vital if you are to fully appreciate the Australian South Sea Islander community.

Defining cultures, Building relationships and Sensitive solutions

use positive case studies as a focus
present case studies as stories
draw out the significance and sensitivities of the stories
ask you to analyse the cultural be beliefs of Australian South Sea Islanders in light of their own beliefs
include reflections sections
provide communication strategies for activities and future references.

Allow an hour to work through each training module.

You can work through the materials online alone – with a workplace group discussion later – or group participants can be guided through the workshop by a facilitator.

Throughout the training:

you are asked to think of creative and flexible solutions to various scenarios
jot down any ideas that come to you as you work through the modules
value the ideas you come up with
consider sharing your ideas with others.
