They include the Alcohol and Drug Training and Resource Unit (ADTRU), the Centre for Drug and Alcohol Studies (CDAS), the Alcohol and Drug Information Service (ADIS), and the Alcohol and Drug Service Library.
Alcohol and Drug Training and Resource Unit (ADTRU)
ADTRU is responsible for the provision of education and training, and resource materials on drugs and alcohol to health and related professionals throughout Queensland. ADTRU’s role has been more clearly defined as the provision of:
- Clinically-relevant education and training, rather than primarily public health education
- Face-to-face training
- Short courses, particularly those relevant to clinical service provision
- Organisational and professional development
- Production and dissemination of resource materials on alcohol and other drugs, especially those relevant to clinical service provision
Current projects include General Practitioner (GP) training and education in community detoxification, and the development of a manual to assist GPs with the effective identification, management and treatment of illicit and pharmaceutical drug problems. The unit has also been involved in the development of assessment and treatment packages for delivery of service provision in relation to the illicit drugs Court Diversion Program.
Centre for Drug and Alcohol Studies (CDAS)
The Centre for Drug and Alcohol Studies has developed a Charter of Services, and has identified its core business objectives as:
- Research into the prevalence, causes and effects of alcohol and other drug problems, and their prevention and treatment, and dissemination of best-practice findings
- Strategic initiatives, including the development of a co-ordinated response to alcohol and drug issues
- Service development, through the provision of technical support and assistance with evaluation methodology, service reviews, and change management
- Publication of research papers, reviews, clinical protocols, and technical reports
- Education and training on alcohol and other drug prevention and treatment
The unit is linked to the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre on Mental Health and Substance Abuse. Current projects include the WHO collaborative studies on brief intervention, the WHO collaborative study on biological markers of alcohol, early intervention for substance use in people with early psychosis, and research into service provision for people with combined mental health and substance use disorders, as part of the Dual Diagnosis Consortium. Recently initiated projects include the validation of a screening and brief intervention package for the Australian Indigenous population, the Hepatitis C Project, and a randomised controlled trial examining cognitive behaviour therapy for amphetamine misuse.
