Outdoor public areas
Since 1 January 2005 some outdoor public places where people gather as groups, and particularly where children are present, are no-smoking zones.
It is important to remember that efforts to help adults to quit smoking and reducing exposure to smoking in public places, sends a positive message to children about not smoking.
Research also indicates that children are much less likely to take up smoking if their schools, homes and recreation areas are smoke-free.
| On-the-spot fines |
$150 on-the-spot fines will be issued to anyone found smoking in the new no-smoking zones. |

From 1 July 2006, commercial outdoor eating or drinking areas become smoke-free.
