About Moranbah

The township of Moranbah was created in 1971 with the primary purpose of providing housing and services to employees and their families within the mining industry. The community is situated 200 kilometres west of Mackay and has a population of approximately 8,500 plus an extra 2, 000 employees housed in the single person's accommodation centres, making it one of the largest mining communities within the Bowen Basin.

Moranbah is one of two towns within the Belyando Shire Council area, the other one being Clermont. Key industries within this local government region include coal mining, beef and agriculture production, tourism and service provision such as health care and education.

There are eight coal-mining operations within the surrounds, with employees for five of these mines residing within the township of Moranbah. The 2001 Australian Bureau of Statistics Census report tabled the weekly income for 50% of the male population as being over $1,000. The single most significant issue facing people residing or wishing to reside in Moranbah is limited housing and water.

Moranbah boasts over 60 active clubs and sporting groups. It is considered a modern town and hosts a number of general retail and commercial outlets, an aquatic complex, cinema, health facilities (a hospital and a community health centre), two primary and one secondary school, a TAFE and an Open Learning Institute.
