Local activities
Activities in Mount Isa are focusing on opportunities that build a sense of connectedness to the community and enhance social support for individuals and groups:
- The inaugural Welcoming Babies Ceremony was held on 12th of May 2006. It was such a successful event that Mount Isa City Council conducted a similar event in 2007, which also included a range of activities to welcome the newest residents to the city. Planning is well underway for the 2008 Welcoming Babies Ceremony.
- Welcome Packs titled 'Mount Isa: there's stacks to do' are being distributed to new employees through seven government and non-government agencies. Included in the packs is a Be Kind to Your Mind booklet, community checklist, quiz sheet and stress check sheet. Employers are encouraged to add newsletters, social club registration forms, contact details of support personnel (settle in coordinators, human resource officers, recruitment officers) and facility maps.

- A number of volunteerism workshops designed to support individuals and groups who manage volunteers were held on 26th - 28th October 2006. The workshops focused on volunteer recruitment and management and grant writing. The workshops were a joint initiative between Volunteering North Queensland, Sport and Recreation Qld and the Mount Isa Police and Citizen Youth Club. Similar workshops were held on the 17th and 18th of August 2007 with Volunteering North Queensland and the Mount Isa Centre for Rural and Remote Health as the key partners.

- Cowmunity Connectedness is a community arts project involving life sized fibreglass cows. The projects aims to provide an opportunity for groups within the community to create a positive image of connectedness to place through art. This activity will provide an opportunity for groups to join together and create a piece of visual art with the support of volunteer artists and community members.

- The Supporting Clubs, Supporting Communities seeding grants project is providing an opportunity for community based sporting and recreational clubs to access funding to conduct activities that support and facilitate recruitment and retention of members. Activities that promote and support people's mental health and wellbeing through increased opportunities for participation, skills development, knowledge transfer and social interaction will are encouraged. Submissions for funding closed on August 31st, 2007 and funding distributed to successful groups from September, 2007.
