Local activities
Activities in Townsville and Thuringowa are focusing on opportunities that build a sense of connectedness and belonging to the community and enhance participation in community activities:
- Battle of the Burbs encourages people from the same street to come together for a trivia night within their local community. Local community groups and clubs are also encouraged to participate. Events are happening across Townsville and Thuringowa and include entertainment, food, prizes and a great opportunity for people to get to know each other. The winning team can win up to $500 in prizes. This initiative is in partnership with Community Renewal, both Townsville Thuringowa City Councils and local community centres and organisations.

- Volunteering is a wonderful opportunity to connect with other people, build self-esteem and develop a sense of connectedness with the community. The volunteering strategy incorporates the following activities:
- Better to give than receive – is a joint initiative Townsville and Thuringowa and Volunteering North Queensland as part of their Christmas Tree Appeal. Traditionally, the community tends to donate cash, food and other items for this appeal, whereas this initiative is promoting the idea of people and businesses donating time to an organisation or club. The donation can be short or long term.
- Recruitment and retention of volunteers – workshops designed to support individuals and groups who manage volunteers were held in October 2006. The workshops focused on volunteer recruitment and management and were a joint initiative with Volunteering North Queensland and the Department of Local Government, Planning, Sport and Recreation Qld and the Tropical Population Unit in Townsville. Additional workshops will be conducted throughout 2007.
- Welcoming Babies Ceremonies are a way of recognising the importance of families to the community and bring together parents celebrating the arrival of a new family member. Ceremonies are held regularly by both Townsville and Thuringowa City Councils and support have been provided to these. In partnership with the Department of Communities and Palm Island workers and residents, a Welcoming Babies Ceremony is being planned for Palm Island.
