Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Cairns Base Hospital

About our Department

Cairns Base Hospital is the major Obstetrics and Gynaecology referral centre for Cairns and Far North Queensland.  There are over 2700 births annually.  Most gynaecological procedures, apart from procedures such as cancer surgery, complicated urogynaecology cases can be performed here.  The hospital specialists also visit smaller regional and remote towns across the Hospital and Health Service area to see outpatients e.g. Weipa, Thursday Island, Lockhart River, Cooktown.

GP Referral Information

The Integrated Women's Health Unit conduct several outpatient services.  If the patient is referred to a named specialist, they can be bulk billed for the service provided if they are seen by a specialist, or if they are seen by a junior doctor and discussed with the specialist.  There is no cost to the patient, and any money raised goes to the hospital.  Referrals are then allocated to the appropriate clinic to be seen by a member of the medical team.  The Referral Guide is updated regularly and distributed to all general practitioners
