Douglas Shire Multi Purpose Health Service (DSMPHS) is located at 9 Hospital Street, Mossman and has a Primary Health Care Clinic at Cow Bay.
The facility located 70 kilometres, or approximately one hour drive north of Cairns along a scenic coastal route. During the tourist season, the Shire welcomes a large number of visitors drawn by the reef and the rainforest.
The centre serves a catchment area that extends north to Bloomfield River, south to Ellis Beach and west to Julatten. This includes the satellite townships of Port Douglas, Cooya Beach, Newell Beach, Wonga Beach, Daintree, Oak Beach and Cow Bay, and covers 2445 square km. The Indigenous custodians of the area covered by the DSMPHS are the Kuku Yalanji people.
The DSMPHS is based on an integrated health care framework that facilitates improved access to a range of health and aged care services that meet community needs. The Multi Purpose Health Service (MPHS) concept is well-documented in Commonwealth and State Health program research outcomes for rural and isolated communities.
