Now called the Gordonvale Memorial Hospital & Palliative Care Unit / Respite Centre, the facility was officially opened on 9 October 2002 by Ms Lindy Nelson Carr, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health.
As a small, country hospital, the Gordonvale facility has had its services enhanced - now providing the ideal environment for this much needed service in the Cairns and Hinterland Health Service District. As part of the hospital’s transformation, Queensland Health funded over $200,000 of refurbishment and provision of equipment, in addition to staff up-skilling. New and improved information technology systems also provide support and direct pathology links.
As Queensland hospitals provide a wide range of emergency reponses, depending on their size. As such, Gordonvale has a primary care service which can provide an initial response and referral.
As the hospital is now specialising in palliative care, the inpatient beds are generally dedicated to those patients. However, anyone presenting to the hospital will be treated or referred appropriately. In addition, Gordonvale patients being treated acutely at Cairns Base Hospital who require lengthy recuperation may be medically assessed as appropriate for transfer to Gordonvale Memorial Hospital for that period so that they can be closer to home
