Statistical information

The Queensland Cervical Screening Program (QCSP) monitors the performance of the Program to inform policy and practice and ensure it is achieving it aims and objectives.

Mortality and incidence
To date there has been a significant reduction in incidence and mortality in Queensland. The incidence of cervical cancer fell in the period 1982-2001. Between 1982-86 the incidence of cervical cancer was 16.2 (per 100,000 women). Over the last four available reporting periods for the QCSP (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003) the incidence has decreased to 9.1, 8.3, 7.9 and 8.0 (per 100,000 women) respectively within Queensland. [1] In 2005, the incidence of cervical cancer among Queensland women was 8.7 per 100,000 women.

Mortality due to cervical cancer has also fallen during this time period. During 1982-86, the mortality rate was 4.5 (per 100,000 women). At the commencement of the NCSP in 1991, the mortality rate in Queensland due to cervical cancer was 4.2 (per 100,000 women). Over the last four available reporting periods (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003) mortality within Queensland due to cervical cancer was 3.3, 2.7, 1.9 and 2.0 (per 100,000 women) respectively.

Participation rates
Measuring participation is a critical indicator of the success of the QCSP. The current policy is that women should participate in screening once every two years, and participation is measured by rates. The participation rate is calculated as a count of the number of eligible women aged 20 to 69 who have had a Pap smear within a two year period and who choose to be registered on the Queensland Health Pap Smear Register (PSR) as a proportion of the eligible population. Women who choose not to have their details sent to the Queensland Health PSR or who choose to have their details removed from the Queensland Health PSR are unable to be counted and therefore, are excluded from the rate.  The state-wide participation rate for the target age group of women aged 20 to 69 was 59.2% in 2006/07 and is lower than the national average participation rate of 60.7% in 2003/04 (latest available figures).
