Building a world-class hospital We start building the new Queensland Children's Hospital this year. First we will get the site ready and then start digging. From there we will build the hospital including a four-level basement carpark so it is ready for Queensland children and young people in 2014. The hospital building will be the best it can be and the focus of design will be to support the healing journey and the unique needs of children, young people and the families who use it. The main building will consist of 10 levels spanning around 63,000 square metres (plus room for expansion), some 5,000 square meters of re-used space in the Mater Children's Hospital and an additional four levels of basement parking. We will use environmentally sustainable design principles to reduce energy use and greenhouse gasses, to save water, reduce emissions and manage waste efficiently. And the new hospital will provide children and families with access to daylight and views, therapeutic gardens and open spaces, a family-centred design and an appealing internal appearance. |
