Family engagement -Tell us what you think Early in the project families who use the Royal Children's Hospital, the Mater Children's Hospital and the Queensland Paediatric Cardiac Service (relocated from the Prince Charles Hospital to the Mater Children's Hospital in mid 2008) gave their views on some options being considered in planning. The results from family surveys have recommended a range of options to be considered during planning for the new QCH. More than 550 families and children completed survey and some of their comments are summarised below. Wards and inpatient areas There should be a mix of single rooms and shared wards. Ideally ward areas should provide sleepers for parents, access toshowers, lounge and kitchen facilities. Entertainment spaces should cater for patients as well as visiting friends and siblings. Facilities for children should include and ability to stay connected with their friends via the internet. Outpatients and day clinics Comfortable waiting areas with separate play spaces for young and older children. Families identified the need for baby changing and feeding facilities and special supports for children who have a disability. Emergency and critical care Adequate parking, set down procedures and plannign for disability parking and access is a high priority. The provision of a children's playground with access to the external enfironment near the emergency department is recommended. Parents of children in intensive care requested on-site/parent accommodation and a lounge area abale to cater for extended families during critical times. Space Access to green space is important. Greater personal space on wards for families is recommended. Adolescents requested that their personal entertainment space be separated from that for young children.
