VIP Recognition Program

Voices for Infection Prevention

Multi-modal programs to increase infection prevention behaviours amongst healthcare workers are now common. Unfortunately, even if infection prevention programs lead a clinician to practice good infection prevention, there is danger that these behaviours will not be sustained over time. Many reasons account for this but one that is noted frequently is the lack of role models. Peer review publications have documented that healthcare workers report that they've abandoned the use of correct hand hygiene when others, especially more senior staff, did not bother. This is likely to happen with other infection prevention behaviours as well.

Research has suggested that a strong motivator for behaviour is performing to expectations set by seniors, peers and even patients.  It is clear that in order for healthcare workers to continue practicing good infection prevention as they have been taught, their workplace mentors must also. The VIP (Voices for Infection Prevention) Reward and Recognition program aims to identify leaders in infection prevention and control as these leaders become role models that influence positive change within the healthcare setting. VIP's can be healthcare workers from any category that consistently demonstrate and advocate exemplary infection practices. The value of these infection prevention role models cannot be underestimated as they are the informal leaders of culture change in healthcare that we want to recognise and acknowledge their valuable contribution.

The VIP Recognition Program is currently available at Caboolture & Kilcoy Hospitals
