Clean hands are life savers

The Clean hands are life savers program is working on changing the culture of Queensland Health hospitals to make hand hygiene a top priority.

Change

Change in any organisation is difficult. As human beings we generally do not respond well to change and can react negatively and even aggressively to changes we don't understand and therefore don't want.
There are generally two ways to embrace change:

Approach 1

People don't want or believe in the change or think it is too difficult so they passively comply with what is proposed, or they can be antagonistic and use blocking actions.
If they comply, they only do so if their actions are monitored. As soon as the monitoring stops, their compliance stops as well.
Long term behavioural change does not happen.

Approach 2

People get passionately and personally involved in the change so actively engage with the program and talk to others and get them involved.

This approach involves the successful engagement of staff through by following a series of phases:

Phase 1

Focuses on establishing a sense of urgency for introducing your project and creating a Change Team with representatives of those you are encouraging to embrace the change

Phase 2

Focuses on how you develop a vision and strategy for the project

Phase 3

Focuses on how you communicate your strategy and engage the team

Phase 4

Focuses on how you motivate your team to undertake broad-based actions and deliver short-term wins

Phase 5

Focuses on consolidating the gains you have made and generating even more change

Phase 6

Focuses on celebrating the project's success, duplicating best practice and embedding it in the culture of your facility to ensure the changes live on

Implementation Guide

The Implementation Guide contains the information you need to roll out the Clean Hands Are Life Savers  Program in your facility. It explains in detail the best way to ensure everyone involved in the program embraces the change. It is designed to help you put this into action, simply and effectively.

This guide will help you understand and embrace effective change management and engagement in a practical and grounded way so there are sustainable improvements around Hand Hygiene in your facility.
