Key Changes
Format
- The original six Recommended Practices were migrated to the Queensland Health Policy Management Policy format which resulted in 1 Standard and 6 Protocols.
Administration sets
- Added: Clinicians shall not intermittently disconnect administration sets used for continuous infusions, due to the increased risk of infection through manipulation of the hub and occlusion due to reflux of blood into the catheter tip when the line is disconnected.
Ethanol lock
- Information on using Ethanol Lock Therapy to preserve a CVC has been included
Blood Culture Collection for Diagnosis of a BSI
- CHRISP Recommendations for Blood Collection - Adults - Hyperlink updated
Replace SDL with LAM
- All references to SDL - Standard Drug List have been replaced with LAM - List of Approved Medicines
Brand names of products removed
- All references to brand names of products have been removed eg. Alcowipes removed, replaced with description of 'single-use 70% alcohol-impregnated swab alcohol'.
Chlorhexidine Recommendation
- Previous recommendations suggested the use of 1-2% Chlorhexidine Gluconate in ≥70% ethyl or isopropyl alcohol, this has changed to 2% Chlorhxidine Gluconate in ≥70% ethyl or isopropyl alcohol.
Word sterile removed
- Word sterile removed in reference to alcohol impregnated wipes.
Change in Recommendation for Antiseptic Impregnated Sponges for Central Line
- Antiseptic-impregnated dressings/sponges are effective in reducing vascular catheter bacterial colonisation. However, additional studies are required before dressings/sponges can be recommended for routine use.
Addition of National Recommendations for labelling
- New national recommendations for labelling of all containers and conduits for all injectable products added to the Standard to ensure compliance with ACSQHC. Hyperlink added.
Storage of IV Fluids removed
- Section removed as this changes depending on the manufacturers recommendations and can vary between facilities dependant upon the supplier used.
Checklists
- Insertion checklist: Format changed. Added question on skin prep type, use of PPE and use of recommended flush or lock.
- Staphylococcus aureus Bloodstream Infection Investigation checklist: Restructured with a decision making tree. Many sections removed that are require the acquisition of subjective or non verifiable information. Previously there were six device-specific investigation checklists which have now been replaced by a single investigation checklist.
