Step 2 - Identifying Core Elements of the Infection Control Management Plan

Now that you have read the legislation that underpins the obligation for an Infection Control Management Plan, you can now begin assessing your practice's compliance with the 10 mandatory minimum elements of an Infection Control Management Plan, as outlined in the below table. The Core Elements specify the minimum standard and should be expanded as appropriate to the scope and complexity of services offered by your facility.

Code Core Element Level of Compliance
ICMP 1 Handwashing and Hand Hygiene Mandatory
ICMP 2 Personal Protective Equipment Mandatory
ICMP 3 Management of Blood/Body Fluid Exposures Mandatory
ICMP 4 Infection Control and Employee Health Mandatory
ICMP 5 Immunisation Mandatory
ICMP 6 Environmental Hygiene Mandatory
ICMP 7 Pre-Treatment Assessment of Infection Control Risk Mandatory
ICMP 8 Non-Reuse of Single Use Medical Devices and Reprocessing of Reuseable Medical Devices Mandatory
ICMP 9 Delegation of Responsibility for Infection Control Mandatory
ICMP 10 Process for the Investigation of Infection Control Incidents Mandatory

Do you already have Infection Control policies/procedures that address each of the 10 mandatory elements? If so, then have them handy so that you can refer to them as we proceed through the next sections.

If you currently do not have any Infection Control policies/procedures in place, you may download or view a copy of the Australian Infection Control Guidelines. You may also like to speak to your professional association to see if they have their own version for members.

Once you have familiarised yourself with the mandatory elements and Infection Control policies/procedures, please progress to Step 3 - Assessing the risk.
