These resistant strains are referred to as VRE and are frequently resistant to other antibiotics generally used to treat enterococcal infections. Patients can be colonised or infected with VRE. In Queensland the majority of VRE isolates to date have been from colonised patients.
This protocol applies to all acute and sub-acute healthcare facilities that manage patients with VRE. The protocol outlines the minimum (mandatory) processes that are to be taken when managing patients colonised or infected with VRE, including:
This implementation checklist is intended to be used to assist in your facility's adoption of the Protocol for the Management of Patients with VRE.
