Competition for sub-specialty placements between advanced general physician trainees and other sub-specialty trainees in Queensland has had a significant impact on the State's capacity to produce general physicians.
Funding for six full-time equivalent (FTE) Advanced General Physician posts is available each year for 2nd and 3rd year Trainees in supernumerary placements. A successful scholarship recipient will be supported for up to 2 years to complete their second and third year of advanced training. The implementation of this initiative is in direct response to the joint Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and Internal Medicine Society of Australia and New Zealand (IMSANZ) Physicians' Action Plan.
In summary, features of the scholarships include:
Regional secondments must be undertaken in Queensland and retrospective recognition of secondments will not be permitted. Given this requirement, scholarship recipients, unlike other trainees, will have guaranteed access to a maximum of $5 000 in approved professional development expenses per annum in their 2nd and 3rd years. This will support their attendance at major professional development activities.
