MIMI is a pilot program funded by QMET and developed in collaboration between the Department of Internal Medicine and Aged Care and Medical Education and Training Services (METS) at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. The program aims to increase the capacity and quality of intern training in the core general medicine rotation.
MIMI uses structured case-based small group interactive teaching to deliver teaching in clinical skills, clinical reasoning, therapeutics and prescribing, and team-based acute aged care. The program incorporates the aims of the Australian Curriculum Framework for Junior Doctors.
Each intern is offered 3-5 hours of face-to-face teaching per week. Teaching safe medication use is also supported by online modules from the National Prescriber Service. The program engages clinician facilitators from a range of health professions including pharmacy, dietetics, speech pathology, occupational therapy, social work, nursing and cardiac sciences, as well as medical specialties including general medicine, geriatrics and radiology. There is an explicit focus on improving communication between disciplines as a means of ensuring safe, high quality care. In addition to critical interpretation of history, examination and investigation findings, sessions include hands-on completion or role play of common intern tasks such as charting medications and fluids, obtaining consent, clinical handover, and requesting consultations.
The program also supports supervision and assessment by providing objective information to supervisors for mid-term and end-of-term assessments, as well as increasing the visibility of METS in their role of supporting junior doctors and their supervisors. Information provided to supervisors includes attendance at education sessions, completion of on-line tasks, and a selection of recent discharge summaries as an example of each intern's comprehension and communication skills.
Evaluation demonstrates high satisfaction with the program and a more positive intern experience of their medical rotation despite an increase in the number of interns in the Department. The program is managed by Dr Alison Mudge, Staff Physician, RBWH Alison_Mudge@health.qld.gov.au
