Process Redesign

Clinical Practice Improvement Centre (CPIC) is involved in this area because the Final Report of the Queensland Health Systems Review (2005) identified an ever-increasing demand on the healthcare system due to an ageing population, new medicines and new technologies, critical staff shortages across all professions, and shortages in infrastructure such as operating theatres and general, high dependency and intensive care beds.

These demands manifest in many contexts for patients and staff and include issues such as ambulance bypass and extended waiting times in emergency departments and for elective surgery.

The Report also identified significant potential for business process redesign to improve the responsiveness of services, particularly improvements to patient flow in acute health services. CPIC is supporting a number of districts to implement patient flow clinical improvement projects.

Watch this space for new innovations in Patient flow.
