The Queensland Audit of Surgical Mortality (QASM) is based on the Scottish model, which has also been used in Western Australia, it has been shown that peer review of all surgical deaths by surgeons is able to reduce deaths in both elective and emergency surgery.
The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) supports a bi-national (Australian and New Zealand) implementation of this form of audit, and CPIC is working in close partnership with the College to develop this facility in Queensland.
