Rockhampton Hospital offers approximately 30 graduate positions each year with the option to work in the he following areas:
- Acute Medical and Surgical Units
- Intensive Care Unit
- Coronary Care Unit
- Renal Unit
- Peri-operative Unit
- Mental Health Unit
- Paediatric Unit
- Cancer & Palliative Care Services
- Geriatric & Rehabilitation Services
- Renal Unit
- Emergency Department
- Aged Care
Graduates are required to complete Transition programs to individual units of placement within the Graduate year and are well supported throughout the program. All graduates are afforded a two week orientation program, including District and Nursing Orientation, Information Services and Mandatory Training. Graduates are supported by being allocated a Preceptor at the Unit level. Clinical Skills workshop days are conducted three times throughout the year and are driven by the needs of the Graduate Nurses themselves. There are specific transition programs in ICU, ED and Peri-operative Unit and opportunity exists to articulate these programs to Graduate Certificate Level.
The Woorabinda Mutilpurpose Health Service Graduate Nursing Program offers opportunity for the graduate nurse to develop competency to meet the broad challenges rural and remote nursing practice: Graduates are supported by being allocated a Preceptor. The program includes:
- Two week initial placement at Rockhampton Hospital within
selected departments to provide orientation and work skills
preparation for rural / remote practice.
- Towards the end of the program there is a further six to eight
week placement at Rockhampton Hospital with rotations
through Medical, Surgical, Emergency and Paediatric Units.
- One week workshop on Rural Skills - IV Cannulation, Trauma
Management, Suturing, Patient Assessment, Assisting with
Advanced Life Support interventions and others.
- Two weeks additional professional development leave is
available throughout the year to provide opportunity to access
clinical skills workshops and other programs of learning specific
to the needs of the individual graduate.
This program provides an excellent preparation to the Rural and Remote setting. These positions extend to full time employment. At the end of the Program the applicant will be offered to extend their position to full-time employment and will be encouraged to undertake a further program of learning towards endorsement as a Rural and Isolated Practice Endorsed Registered Nurse.
