Supervised Practice for Overseas Trained Specialists (SPOTS)
Real life stories
"SPOTS would have made a huge difference in terms of information, support, time and eventually expense in achieving my goal of gaining full FACEM. I have always been impressed with the high quality of Emergency physicians in Australia and the high regard in which Emergency Medicine is held. I was aware of the generous working conditions offered by Queensland Health and also the opportunity to practice high quality emergency medicine with fewer financial constraints and more autonomy. There are numerous clinical, academic, medical education and medical administration opportunities available to me and real support to pursue these".
Dr Duncan McAuley, SPOTS Program Director made the move from UK, he knows first hand what is involved. |

How SPOTS can support you
| The SPOTS program provides a dedicated pathway to support overseas trained specialists in emergency medicine in gaining recognition as a specialist by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine.
In the first instance overseas trained specialists apply to the Australian Medical Council. Once suitability is determined documentation is forwarded to the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM). A structured assessment process utilising the college procedural guidelines is applied, in most cases a recommendation for a period of supervised practice within a major referral facility staffed by 3 or more FACEM’s is required.
This is where SPOTS can assist; the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) is the largest tertiary hospital in Queensland and is the home to the SPOTS program.

What will the SPOTS program deliver?
The large team of FACEMs at the RBWH will provide dedicated supervision and support of the participant and oversee the educational module which includes:
- Development of an individual learning plan
- Support for ACEM4.10 (research skills) requirements
- Workplace based assessment to demonstrate adequate skills knowledge for specialist practice
- Access to an energetic medical education program

How do you access SPOTS?
Eligible program participants will need to:
- Apply to the Australian Medical Council (AMC ) via the Specialist Assessment Pathway. Once suitability is determined your documentation will be forwarded to the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM). Following a face-to-face structured interview and completion of all requirements a recommendation report will be provided to you.
- If your recommendation report indicates you are required to undertake a period of supervised practice in an accredited major referral emergency department staffed by three or more FACEMs, SPOTS may be an option for you.
- Secure an employment contract with a Queensland Health facility. Please note you do have the opportunity to secure employment with Queensland Health via the area of need process (AON) process and proceed with specialist recognition once employed.
- Obtain the support of your employing facility to undertake the period of supervised practice at RBWH and they will organise your placement with the SPOTS program.
