eHealth
What is eHealth
The vision
eHealth will deliver information and communications technology (ICT) that will enable clinicians to find each other, the information and equipment they need to communicate and work together to improve organisational performance through patient outcomes.
Why eHealth
Factors such as an ageing population, an increase in chronic disease and a global shortage of health professionals place increased pressure on Queensland Health to deliver more with less. More >>
What eHealth will deliver
eHealth will deliver a shared electronic medical record. Various care providers will be able to directly and securely have access to medical information about a patient at their fingertips, in turn enhancing their capability to deliver safe and effective care. More >>
What eHealth will mean
eHealth will enable patients to have better access to services, improve safety through reducing the likelihood of adverse events and support collaboration through the sharing of information. More>>
The principles behind the eHealth program
The following principles are to be applied to all decisions and actions taken in the eHealth program. If we are not living up to these principles, please let us know.
-
Focus on achieving improvements in health care with technology as an enabler. The objective is to take advantage of technology advances as a catalyst for change to reduce stress on current systems of care and to provide a higher level of quality
-
Implement standards based practical solutions that improve the quality of care and patient outcomes by providing reliable and accessible information on which to base decision making and treatment planning. The objective is to start simple and refine solutions over time.
-
Engage collaboratively with key health care stakeholders to drive the design and delivery of eHealth solutions. Success requires business ownership, leadership direction and collaboration.
-
Develop capability in a phased and pragmatic manner and realise benefits incrementally. Initial investment will be focused in those areas that deliver the greatest benefits and short-term, visible improvements. By engaging in a portfolio of activities, eHealth will deliver simple and practical capabilities first to meet high priority needs, learn from this experience and then extend these capabilities over time.
-
Leverage and build upon relevant projects and existing capabilities. Recognise and leverage the existing projects and the varying levels of existing capability across facilities. Be flexible in implementation and provide adequate support where required while not constraining the ability for more advanced participants to progress.
-
Align to State and National strategic objectives. Alignment to State Government and Queensland Health Strategic objectives, the National eHealth Strategy, and NeHTA.
-
Achieve balance of focus between innovation for the future, goal state architecture and immediate delivery needs.
The eHealth priority areas
The priorities were identified in early 2008 to direct the implementation of the eHealth strategy. They have been approved through the program’s clinical and ICT governance. More>>
