About eHealth

Environmental factors such as an ageing and growing population, combined with a global shortage of trained resources is placing increased pressure on Queensland Health to deliver more with less. Recommendations arising from a number of recent reviews identified the need to create capacity within the Department and ultimately improve quality of care and patient safety.

These reviews acknowledged information systems and smart technologies as a key enabler in the delivery of health outcomes within Queensland. As a result, QH has committed to a major transformation to renew services and trust in our health system as aligned to the Queensland Statewide Health Services Plan 2007-12.

The eHealth Approach

Our eHealth approach is to move away from a system where the patient must carry parts of their medical history around a complex network of care. Through the smart use of technologies, various care providers, both within and outside QH, will be able to directly and securely access all medical information about a patient at their fingertips, thus enhancing their capability to deliver safe and effective care.

This approach is outlined below as part of Patient-Centric Networked Model of Care. Our approach will aim to deliver value early and continuously, leverage existing information assets, use proven technologies and align to the national eHealth agenda.

Queensland Health’s approach follows successful international eHealth Programs in the United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada, Denmark and the Netherlands. A number of presentations from leading international and national speakers, with collective leadership responsible for well in excess of $20 billion of investment in the eHealth arena globally are available on the eHealth Symposium page.
