The eHealth initiatives proposed under Queensland Health’s eHealth program aim to ensure Queensland Health's medical workforce spend less time on managing information and administration duties, and more time focussed on where their services are required most, the care of patients.
The smart use of technology and better information management will allow for improved sharing for information both within Queensland Health and with external care providers. Queensland health care workers will have access to more complete and accurate patient information improving safety and reducing the likelihood of adverse events due to allergies and drug reactions.
For patients, it will mean improved care quality, better access to specialist care services, reduced waiting times and the number of trips to care providers and treatments.
Electronic Health Record
One of the primary eHealth initiatives to be delivered by Queensland Health is based on highly successful international eHealth Programs in the United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada, Denmark and the Netherlands.
Queensland Health will implement an Enterprise Information Repository, a centralised, state wide electronic repository of accurate and reliable patient information for care providers both within and external to Queensland Health. The repository will be fed by existing information systems currently in Queensland Health, as well as upgraded and new information systems yet to be implemented.
The electronic health records will be made accessible to care providers, and ultimately patients through secure Internet User Portals. Possible user portals include GPs, Health Professionals, Emergency Departments and Anaesthetists.
In addition, new smart technologies will be implemented such as mobile devices, faster broadband, and telecommunications and video conferencing capability to ehance access to care in rural and remote locations, and improve waiting times and clinical decision making.
A number of key new information systems will be developed to support the electronic record and improve health care practice including medications reporting, diagnostic imaging, resource scheduling, community health, mental health and chronic disease management, and ePrescribing and eOrdering.
