National eHealth Strategy

In early 2008, Australian Health Ministers, through the Australian Health Ministers' Advisory Council, commissioned Deloitte to develop a strategic framework and plan to guide national coordination and collaboration in eHealth. As part of this process, Deloitte conducted a series of national consultations which included Commonwealth, State and Territory Governments, general practitioners, medical specialists, nursing and allied health, pathology, radiology and pharmacy sectors, health information specialists, health service managers, researchers, academics and consumers.

The National eHealth Strategy developed by Deloitte, together with key stakeholders, provides a useful guide to the further development of eHealth in Australia. It adopts an incremental and staged approach to developing eHealth capabilities to:

The Strategy reinforces the existing collaboration of Commonwealth, State and Territory Governments on the core foundations of a national eHealth system, and identifies priority areas where this can be progressively extended to support health reform in Australia. It also provides sufficient flexibility for individual States and Territories, and the public and private health sectors, to determine how they go about eHealth implementation within a common framework and set of priorities to maximise benefits and efficiencies.

Queensland Health eHealth Strategy

After significant consultation across Queensland Health (QH), a public document was developed by Deloitte for informing the department's eHealth Strategy. QH has progressed this strategy through  implementation planning. The Strategy has been revised to reflect progress made since its original development and to ensure consistency with the funding cycle of the Queensland Government.

For 2007-08, QH received an additional funding injection of $40 million to commence a multi year investment in eHealth initiatives (view the Ministerial Media Statement for eHealth or the 2007-08 Budget Highlights for Information Communications Technology (ICT)).

To manage the multi-year investment in eHealth, a portfolio framework has been agreed. Each eHealth initiative shall be assigned to the relevant program area and included in the eHealth Roadmap. The eHealth Roadmap is currently being developed to show the key priorities for QH in terms of ICT investment over the next five to seven years.

Through a business case process, initiatives will be selected from the roadmap and become part of the eHeatlh program of work managed internally by QH.
