Factors such as an ageing and fast growing population, an increase in chronic disease and a global shortage of health professionals place increased pressure on Queensland Health to deliver more with less.
Currently clinicians spend significant amounts of time finding patient information because it is held in a paper medical file which often is not easy to access when and where it is needed. An electronic medical record (eMR) with supporting devices and mobile technology provides electronic access to information when and where clinicians need it – at the point of care.
The primary drivers for eHealth are quality and safety, however there are also secondary benefits that help decrease the time clinicians need to spend on administration and increase the time they can spend caring for patients. Quality and safety are the key drivers behind the National eHealth Strategy and Queensland Health’s eHealth strategy. Allowing clinicians more time to spend on patient care improves not only the patient’s experience and health outcomes but also makes a contribution to how Queensland Health performs overall.
