aste management legislationBelow are short summaries of the Act, Regulations and Policy.
Please note: the summaries are not legal interpretations. They are guides only. It is the responsibility of EHWs to understand how legislation affects their roles and their councils’ responsibilities.
Family households, schools and businesses all produce some waste as part of their daily activities. The Environmental Protection Act 1994 aims to reduce waste and ensure all waste is managed so that it doesn’t cause health or environmental problems.
Local governments have legal responsibilities under this Act to manage waste within their boundaries. EHWs should ensure that their councils are aware of these legal responsibilities and do everything they can to help their council meet these responsibilities.
You’ll find more information about roles and responsibilities in:
In its Waste Management Information Sheet, the Environmental Protection Agency highlights the following points in the Regulation:
This Policy is administered by the Environmental Protection Agency and deals with:

The aim of the Policy is to help make development in Queensland sustainable. It encourages communities to improve their quality of life without damaging the health of people or the natural environment.
There are five different ways of dealing with waste – avoiding, reusing, recycling, changing from waste to energy and disposing.
The Policy lists the five ways in a hierarchy (from the best to the worst). The Policy also sets out principles to ensure that everyone takes responsibility for the waste they create. You’ll find these in Waste Management Hierarchy and Principles.
There is a Summary of the Policy on the EPA website.
