Role of Environmental Health Workers in waste management

EHWs protect the health of their communities against waste hazards, and help ensure that their councils meet their obligations under waste management laws.

Depending on the job description of individual EHWs, their role could include:

• promoting a reduction in waste by council, households, and businesses
• monitoring waste management in their community, including the council rubbish collection and the facilities where waste is stored or disposed of
• enforcing the relevant waste laws
• working with EHWs in other local government areas on sharing resources and developing joint waste management plans.

EHWs are vital links between councils and communities. By being well informed and alert to problems, EHWs gain support for their work from both the council and community.
