Falls and fall related injuries are amongst the most serious and common medical problems experienced by older persons.
Given the incidence and impact of falls in older persons combined with the increasing older population in Queensland, a Statewide Action Plan: Falls Prevention in Older People 2002-2006 has been developed to provide a strategic framework for coordinated action by Queensland Health across the continuum of care.
In order to address falls in Public Hospitals and State Government Aged Care Facilities, the Quality Improvement and Enhancement Project has reviewed the literature (June 2003 Literature Review Update) and developed best practice guidelines for these settings incorporating a community integration supplement.
A number of support resources have also been developed for use with clients.
A number of activities to prevent falls in older persons are currently being undertaken by Queensland Health.
