Queensland Health advises parents in South East Queensland that their children should not be taking fluoride tablets or drops now that fluoride is being added to water supplies. The amount of fluoride being added to the water is sufficient for children and adults to receive an oral health benefit and negates the need for supplements. Parents should consult with their dentist if they have any concerns about water fluoridation.
Acting Chief Dental Officer Dr Ralph Neller said as water was progressively fluoridated in their area, parents no longer needed to provide these supplements, and should cease the practice.
Children benefit from water fluoridation as soon as their teeth are formed - giving the best chance of having healthy teeth for life. Teenagers also benefit as they are at higher risk of developing tooth decay.
