How does someone return to the community as part of their treatment?

Limited community treatment (LCT) (a form of leave) provides the only mechanism for a person on a forensic order to access community treatment and rehabilitation.

LCT may only be ordered or approved by the Mental Health Court (MHC) when making a forensic order or by the Mental Health Review Tribunal (the Tribunal) when reviewing the order. The level of LCT approved is the maximum level that can be accessed by the patient. Once LCT is approved by the MHC or the Tribunal, an authorised doctor may, under the patient's treatment plan, authorise LCT for the patient.

Decisions relating to LCT and any associated conditions must be reflected in the patient's treatment plan (individual care plan) and the limited community treatment plan.

If limited community treatment is approved, the mental health team provide close monitoring, support and may require that the person be brought back to a mental health facility if the person is not adhering to limited community treatment conditions
