How does a mental health service keep the individual and community safe?

A team of health professionals in a mental health service oversee the person's admission, assessment, treatment and possible rehabilitation back into the community.

The mental health team can tailor treatment to the individual needs of the person using the different experience, knowledge and skills of each team member. The team will provide regular appointments with the treating psychiatrist and assist with accessing other support services the person may require. The team can also offer support to the family and carers of the person with a mental illness.

The Mental Health Act 2000 permits the mental health service to return any person on an involuntary treatment order or forensic order to a mental health facility to review their mental state if necessary at any time. The Mental Health Review Tribunal also conducts six monthly reviews of the forensic order. Reviews can be held earlier if necessary.
