Public mental health services:

• support people who experience mental illness
• offer short term and longer term treatment in hospital and in the community, based on individuals' needs
• provide clinical assessment and treatment including medication
• help meet the needs of people at different stages of their illness and their recovery
• assist people to develop a quality life and take part in the community.
  

Staff includes, but are not limited to:

• doctors and psychiatrists
• nurses
• psychiatrists and other medical doctors
• psychologists
• social workers
• occupational therapists
• indigenous health workers and
• consumer consultants.

Public mental health services are located across Queensland so people can receive treatment as close as possible to their homes and communities.

Public mental health services:

• develop and undertake a treatment plan with the person
• regularly review the treatment plan through clinical assessment and team meetings.  There are also independent reviews conducted by the Mental Health Review Tribunal

If the person has been receiving treatment in an inpatient mental health facility and the treatment team have determined that the person is ready to commence transition into the community, an application for Limited Community Treatment (a form of leave) will be made. 

The Mental Health Review Tribunal receives the application and determines whether or not to grant the limited community treatment and specify the conditions of leave.

If limited community treatment is approved, the mental health team provide close monitoring, support and can enforce readmission to a mental health facility if the person is not meeting the conditions of their limited community treatment.
