Building a brand new hospital from concept to completion is a complex process. It involves input from many different disciplines including architects, engineers, health planners, clinicians and building specialists; and entails a great many stages of planning. |
July 2007 to October 2007 Identifies the type, amount and location of health services required to meet the health care needs of a community. |
July 2007 to November 2007 The project team determine how to best actualise the Health Service Plan; including location, size, orientation and flexibility of the facility for future expansion. |
January 2008 to September 2008 Laying out the departments within the new hospital buildings. This includes deciding what rooms are required in each department, and where they will be placed in relation to each other. |
September 2008 to June 2009 Detailed design of each room, including placement of floor coverings, lights, basins, furniture; and services such as electrical and medical gas outlets. |
December 2008 to August 2009 Preparing the site for construction of the buildings by undertaking earth and other works such as drainage. |
August 2009 to December 2012 Current stage: |

December 2012 to early 2013 The new facility will be operationally tested through trial runs of all services such as the kitchen, operating theatres and other clinical areas including emergency procedures which will facilitate staff orientation and training in their new work environment. This will ensure the Gold Coast University Hospital is safe, and ready for occupancy. |
Early 2013 to mid 2013 The relocation of staff and services from the existing Gold Coast Hospital to the new Gold Coast University Hospital, and the commencement of health service delivery from the new Gold Coast University Hospital. |
