Doctors

Specialist/Senior Consultant

Senior Medical Officers (SMOs) (Staff Specialists) are medical practitioners who have undertaken training in a particular specialty and have completed the requirements of registration in the specialty.

Specialist positions exist at the Gold Coast Hospital in all specialties listed under Health Services - Divisions. The hospital provides all major clinical specialities except cardio-thoracic surgery and major burns and has training registrars in most specialities.

Registrars and residents

Resident Medical Officers (RMO) are junior doctors who have successfully completed their intern year. RMOs are separated into the following categories for employment and training:

Registrars are doctors who have been accepted into an accredited specialist training program in a clinical specialty.

RMOs work in teams led by senior medical staff and with support by Registrars in specific clinical specialties. They are employed on 12 month temporary contracts.

Interns

Interns are usually medical graduates in their first year of practice following completion of a medical degree.

The Gold Coast Hospital and other Queensland Health facilities are currently the sole provider of intern training in the state of Queensland. Interns are employed on 12 month temporary contracts.
