Cyclones are a natural occurrence in tropical areas of the world. They can bring very destructive winds and flooding.
In Queensland, people are given plenty of warning about cyclones. If a cyclone is developing off the coast, local radio and television stations and the Bureau of Meteorology website issue regular cyclone updates.
The Bureau of Meteorology also has a Cyclone Preparedness Checklist.
See the Queensland Government State Disaster Management Group website for:
Emergency Management Queensland has cyclone preparation advice in six languages: Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Hmong, Samoan and Italian.
Information can also be obtained from local councils such as the Cairns City Council or Mackay City Council website.
The cyclone season in Queensland is normally between November and April, with most occurring between January and March. Several cyclones can develop in a season without crossing the coast, meaning that they will die out at sea.
