Spider bites strike fear into the hearts of many people. However, due to the success of antivenoms, the risk of secondary infection is now of more concern than the bite itself.

Spiders are mostly active at night and some house spiders, for example the huntsman, are helpful at keeping insects at bay.

If you are bitten by a spider, follow general first aid for bites and stings.

If you develop symptoms such as sweating, muscle aches and pains, nausea or headache you should seek urgent medical attention at the nearest hospital emergency department. Antivenom is available.

If the area looks infected or inflamed, the patient should see their local doctor.

The Queensland Museum website has photos and information to help you identify spiders.
