Home Care Services: Chemical Handling Manual

Many Australian and overseas studies have analysed the ingredients in household cleaning products and have highlighted a risk of exposure to various chemicals to workers who perform domestic cleaning tasks.

An example of one study showed that workers performing domestic cleaning tasks are at an increased risk of developing asthma and other breathing problems due to the chemicals they are exposed to.

Rates of respiratory symptoms which could be attributed to domestic cleaning work were more than double those of other jobs (Kogevinas, M; et al, 1999). Suitable cleaning products will be discussed with you during the initial assessment.

Home Care Services: Infection Control Manual

As a result of the reduction in the length of hospital stay, the delivery of health care in the home setting has grown. During the past decade, health care delivery has undergone enormous changes; services are now being offered in, and in many cases shifting to other settings such as people's homes.

There are about 70 000 paid workers providing home care to people who are frail, aged or who have disability or illness around Australia. With the increasing aged population this number will continue to grow. The home is a unique working environment and Home Care Workers may be exposed to different risk factors than other health care workers.
