Child and Youth Health Practice Manual for Child Health Nurses and Indigenous Child Health Workers

This manual covers practice issues and guidelines for child, youth and family health practice. It is specifically designed for Child and Youth Health Nurses and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child and Youth Health Workers who are working with families, children and young people (0-18 years) within Queensland Health. The manual will be a very valuable clinical practice tool and resource for new practitioners and will also provide a detailed reference tool for experienced Child Health Nurses.

The Strategic Policy Framework for Children's and Young People's Health 2002-2007 is a guide for people at the intersectoral, interdepartmental, corporate, statewide, zonal and district service provider and practitioner levels who are striving to address the health needs of children and young people.

Optimal Infant Nutrition: Evidence-Based Guidelines

Optimal Infant Nutrition: Evidence-Based Guidelines 2003-2008 were developed to assist Queensland Health in the promotion and support of breastfeeding and the appropriate introduction of solid food. The Guidelines contribute to the implementation of the Strategic Policy Framework for Children’s and Young People’s Health 2002-2007 and complement the recently released NHMRC Dietary Guidelines for Children and Adolescents Incorporating the Infant Feeding Guidelines for Health Workers.

The infant feeding recommendations and scientific evidence contained in the Queensland Health Optimal Infant Nutrition: Evidence-Based Guidelines are based on the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Infant Feeding Guidelines. The Australian Dietary Guidelines, including the Infant Feeding Guidelines, are currently under review by the NHMRC. The outcomes of this evidence based review are expected in 2010. Therefore the timeline for the Optimal Infant Nutrition: Evidence-Based Guidelines will be extended until 2010.

Queensland Health Guidelines for Using Screening and Surveillance in the Early Detection of Childhood Health Conditions

These Guidelines are designed to support Zones and Health Service Districts to plan for and implement evidence-based screening and surveillance within a comprehensive system for the early detection of childhood health conditions through:

The Guidelines will support staff to establish collaborative partnerships, reorient services and progress decisions regarding future resource investment. They provide a universal framework which enables appropriate services to be targeted to those with a high risk of health problems.
