The links between health and education are well established. Healthy children are better able to learn, and higher educational achievement is strongly associated with better health. Health and education professionals have complementary roles in securing better health and learning outcomes for our children and young people.
The Healthy Schools website has been developed as a resource to support health professionals and school communities across the state in the work that they are doing to create schools that are healthy places to learn, work and play.
Information, resources and links on a variety of topics including the internationally recognised best practice Health Promoting Schools approach, specific health issues and key policy documents can be found on the site.
It is intended that the information, resources and links on this site will be useful for a wide audience including health professionals such as School Based Youth Health Nurses, Health Promotion Officers and school staff, parents and students.
Users are encouraged to visit the site regularly to access the latest information, resources and links, as well as examples and ideas from other schools.
Within this site, information and resources include:
A Toolbox for creating healthy places to learn, work and play gives a comprehensive background and outline to the theoretical and practical aspects of the health promoting schools approach. The toolbox also offers a collection of tools to assist schools in the design, management, coordination and organisation of programs and activities.
Healthy Schools case studies highlight the wide variety of ways and levels that the health promoting schools approach is being used in schools. Each case study is a unique story about how the school became involved with this approach and their subsequent journey. The story has been told by members of the school community.
Included are a range of recent documents and information that can assist in the development of healthy schools. We have included policy and strategic documents such as the Queensland Health, Working Together for Healthy Schools position statement as well as web-links to key organisations that provide a wealth of useful information and resources.
