Health Practitioner Research

Health research is essential to inform evidence-based health care, including services provided by practitioners within allied health. Health practitioner research in Queensland Health is strategically guided the Queensland Advancing Health Research 2026 (PDF 4783 kB) strategy. As demand for health care continues to grow, health research that innovates and creates new knowledge to meet the challenges of the health system to provide high quality care for consumers is critically important.

The Office of the Chief Allied Health Officer (OCAHO) recognises the important role of research in supporting evidence-based allied health activity to improve client outcomes. OCAHO’s goal is to support allied health practitioners to conduct high-quality research that is recognised and contributes to national and international research agendas.

Research is one of the integral pillars within OCAHO’s 10-year strategy Optimising the allied health workforce for best care and best value: A 10-year Strategy 2019-2020. The Queensland Health Allied Health Research Plan: 2020-2029 (the research plan) operationalises the research pillar within the 10-year strategy and guides the development and research capacity building of allied health workforce in Queensland over the next ten years.

The three strategic priorities of the research plan are to:

  1. Promote and embed a research culture, including translation of evidence into practice, within the allied health workforce.
  2. Build research partnerships and collaborations across sectors, health services, consumers, industry, health teams and academic institutions, and at local, state, national and international levels.
  3. Develop research career structures and pathways for professionals within allied health.

The key initiatives include:

The Health Practitioner Research Scheme (HPRS)

Health Practitioner Research Fellows

Allied Health Translating Research into Practice (AHTRiP)

Rural and Remote Research Capacity Building Program (RRR-Cap)
