Vaccination Records

For:

Babies and young children

It is important that you keep your immunisation records in a safe place. For babies and young children, your doctor or immunisation provider records all vaccines given in your child’s Personal Health Record book (the red booklet given to you at the time of your child’s birth for recording vaccination history and developmental checks).

Children’s vaccination information is also sent to the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register (ACIR) and Queensland Health’s Vaccination Information and Vaccination Administration System (VIVAS).

Immunisation history statements for children under seven years of age are available from the ACIR on 1800 653 809 (ensure you have your Medicare number ready), online at www.medicareaustralia.gov.au or from a Medicare office.

Your doctor can also contact the ACIR, with your consent, to check your child’s immunisation history.

Alternatively, VIVAS has been recording vaccinations since 1996 and your immunisation provider can contact the nearest Public Health Unit for your child’s immunisation history. You cannot directly access these records from the Unit.

Please note that ACIR and Queensland Health only record vaccines funded under the National Immunisation Program; private purchase vaccines (such as travel vaccines) may not be recorded.

Queensland Health does have records of:

Hepatitis B vaccination did not become part of the National Immunisation Program Schedule until 2000. Unless a child was vaccinated against hepatitis B as part of a specific program or the vaccine was purchased with a doctor’s prescription, the child will not have been vaccinated.

Adolescents and school children

Before 1996, immunisation records should be available from the doctor or immunisation provider who vaccinated your child (now at school and/or an adolescent) at that time. Queensland Health does not have these records.

In 1996, the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register (ACIR) and Queensland Health’s Vaccination Information and Vaccination Administration System (VIVAS) were established. For immunisation records from 1996 for vaccinations given up to the age of seven years, you can contact the ACIR on 1800 653 809 (ensure you have your Medicare number ready). Your doctor can also contact the ACIR, with your consent, to check your child’s immunisation history.

Alternatively, your immunisation provider can contact the nearest Public Health Unit for your child’s immunisation history. You cannot directly access these records from the Unit.

Please note that ACIR and Queensland Health only record vaccines funded under the National Immunisation Program; private purchase vaccines (such as travel vaccines) may not be recorded. Be aware that depending on the age of your child, they may not have a complete history of childhood vaccinations.

Information about immunisations received by adolescents through the School Based Vaccination Program is available from the service provider who vaccinated your child at school. If you wish to access these records, please write to the school program service provider stating your child's name, date of birth, school where vaccination took place, date or estimated date of vaccination and class number. If you cannot recall who provided the immunisation service at your child’s school, telephone 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84).

At the time of vaccination in the School Program, all students are given an immunisation record to take home. Keep this record in a safe place or ask your doctor to record this vaccination next time you visit.

If you wish to access Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination records, contact the National HPV Vaccination Program Register on 1800 478 734 or email enquiries@hpvregister.org.au.

Adults

Adult vaccinations are not currently recorded by national and/or state immunisation registers. It is best that you keep a record of all your vaccinations, or you would need to check with the doctor or immunisation provider who vaccinated you at that time.

However, if you are female and consented to be vaccinated as part of the National Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Program, your HPV immunisation details are available from the National HPV Vaccination Program Register on 1800 478 734 or email enquiries@hpvregister.org.au.
