Immunisation

Are vaccinations free?

Vaccines included on the National Immunisation Program Schedule for adults and children are provided free to eligible persons.  An approved nurse or doctor will give you the injection and there may be a consultation fee.  There may be other vaccines recommended for you that you will need to purchase.  Talk to your doctor for advice on which vaccinations you need.

Some local governments provide free vaccination clinics.  You can find out more information about these clinics by contacting your local council.

Keeping vaccines that you buy safe

For some immunisations, you will need to get a prescription from your doctor and buy the vaccine from a pharmacy.  It is very important that the vaccine is given as soon as possible. If it is incorrectly stored a vaccine may lose its potency and become ineffective. To store the vaccine in a home refrigerator, or to place it in a car or handbag for a length of time may mean that an expensive vaccine you have purchased will not give you the protection you need.  It is suggested that you collect the vaccine from the pharmacy just before you attend the doctor, and on arrival, give the vaccine to the practice receptionist for storage until you go in for your appointment.
