Vaccination Information and Vaccination Administration System (VIVAS)
Since 1996, immunisation data in the State has been recorded by Queensland Health’s Vaccination Information and Vaccination Administration System or VIVAS. VIVAS is a register of vaccination events for all childhood vaccines given in Queensland through the free National Immunisation Program Schedule and is an automated vaccine distribution system.
VIVAS is used for the following purposes:
- To forward vaccination information to the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register (ACIR), which is maintained by the Australian Government. This is necessary to ensure that Australian Government payments such as the Maternity Immunisation Allowance and the Child Care Benefit can be paid to Queensland families.
- To provide doctors with an immunisation history of their child patients.
- To send reminder lists to service providers of children who may be unvaccinated or overdue for vaccination.
- To monitor the number, type and expiry date of vaccines. This allows Queensland Health to quickly follow-up with doctors and health providers if a vaccine batch is found to be faulty, and to identify providers holding stock that is expected to expire before use.
- To remind health providers of the vaccination status of Indigenous children, adolescents and adults due for influenza and pneumococcal immunisations.
- To assist Queensland Health to respond to outbreaks of vaccine preventable diseases.
- To assist in monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of immunisation programs. Some immunisation rates are calculated from VIVAS which are used in projects to encourage vaccination where it is most needed. (Please note these statistical reports do not contain personal information).
- To distribute vaccine for the National Immunisation Program Schedule including some state programs to service providers across the state.
Public Health Units across the State have access to VIVAS and can respond locally to requests for information from immunisation service providers. This data is also used for program planning.
